Wrote Your Food Shoot Brief With AI? Ask It Four Things First

What to check before the quotes come in.

By Andras Dietrich

What should you check before sending a food shoot brief written with AI?

Before you send a food shoot brief written with ChatGPT or Claude, ask the AI four things: how many set-ups the brief includes, how long the shoot would take, what crew it needs and what equipment. If the answers say several days and a big team, so will the quote. And an AI mood board is not your real product.

Is it fine to write a food shoot brief with AI?

Most people do it now. Nothing wrong with it.

But I had one go really wrong.

What did the AI brief actually ask for?

60 video clips and 80 styled images. Every one of those is a different set-up.

So I explained. This is a shoot over multiple days with a big crew. Around ten times the project they had in mind.

Then I proposed what could be done for the budget.

A real food shoot set with many products, flavours and variants laid out on a wooden table, so there is always a best one to choose from, with the shot reviewed on a laptop
A real set: many products, flavours and variants, so there is a best one to choose.

What happens when the AI mood board comes back?

AI-rendered pictures. Nice, pretty, and nothing like a real shoot. The real product is in the real picture, and these renders did not have it.

I said so. This is not going to look like this.

The client seemed to understand. Happy with the brief, happy with the shots.

And afterwards? The complaint was that the photos did not look like the AI renders.

The real thing, shot for real.

What should you ask the AI before you send the brief?

Before you send an AI brief to anyone, ask the AI these four things.

How many set-ups does this brief include?

How long would it take to shoot all of this?

What crew does it need to pull it off?

What equipment does it expect?

Then you are not surprised when the quotes come in. And you understand what is really going on.

Got a brief, AI-written or not?

Send it over. I will tell you what it really takes to shoot it.
